Redhill Police Station

When I saw the Bachmann two-storey office block my immediate reaction was that it was a ‘must have’ for the layout. However in the time between its initial release and my getting around to buying one they do seem to have become rather familiar. The Hornby Skaledale and Bachmann Scenecraft ‘ready-to-plonk’ buildings have, it seems, become the 21st century equivalent of the old Superquick kit.

So, inspired by Kier Hardy’s treatment of the building ( Click here for photos and background) for his new layout I decided that the model was ripe for redevelopment.

I sketched a plan for the interior which involved the main entrance being moved one bay to the left and then set to work. The doors and windows are etched brass stuck to thin acetate. They can be removed by pushing with a finger from inside. It doesn't matter if the acetate tears - that is easily replaced. I cut a new doorway using a razor saw.

A piece of 60 thou plastic card was cut to fit inside the building and be the ground floor. Three strips of 60 thou were glued underneath it to raise the floor above ground level. A length of 40 thou plastic card was cut into a long strip, 32mm tall. The strip was then used to make the interior walls on the ground floor. I reckoned that the doors would be closed most of the time and so didn't bother to cut them out. With the walls in place I painted the floor with a 1960’ linoleum brown colour (actually it was Railmatch Dark Rust) and then stuck on interior wall and door details from a sheet downloaded from Jim Smith-Wright’s P4 New Street web-site.

And that is as far as I’ve got.
